About The Project

Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas

Known affectionately as “the Angelicum,” the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas has been a principal center of Dominican intellectual life for nearly five centuries — a place where the Order of Preachers continues its ancient mission of seeking truth and forming the next generation of theologians, philosophers, and Church leaders.

Founded in 1577 as the College of Saint Thomas, the Angelicum traces its origins to the Order’s earliest commitment to scholarly excellence in the city of Rome. Pope John XXIII raised it to the status of a Pontifical University in 1963, formally recognizing its role as one of the foremost institutions of Catholic higher learning in the world.

Today, the Angelicum offers degree programs in theology, philosophy, social sciences, and canon law to a student body that gathers in Rome from more than ninety countries. Its faculties continue the Dominican tradition of rigorous inquiry — pursuing the questions that matter most to faith and reason, in the spirit of the saint whose name it bears.

The study of philosophy is not that we may know what others have thought, but what the truth of things is.

A Dominican House of Studies in the Heart of Rome

The Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas, commonly known as the Angelicum, is a Dominican institution located in the heart of Rome. It contains Faculties of Theology, Philosophy, Canon Law, and Social Sciences.

The roots of the Angelicum reach the medieval Dominican house of studies in Rome, founded in the XIII century, in which Aquinas taught. It offers education in Italian and English for students of nearly 100 different nationalities, and collaborates with academic institutions from all over the world.

Life at the Angelicum

The university’s campus, situated on the Aventine Hill in central Rome, includes a basilica, library, classical courtyard, and chapels where students and friars gather for worship and study. Daily life at the Angelicum is shaped by the rhythms of Dominican prayer, communal meals, and the intellectual exchange that has characterized the Order since its founding by Saint Dominic in the 13th century.

Whether through endowing a faculty position, contributing to a scholarship fund, or making a one-time gift, your partnership with the Angelicum is a partnership with a centuries-old tradition of seeking truth in the service of the Church.
